The S-series used the following engines:

  • LL0 (DOHC MPFI) (124bhp)
  • LK0 (SOHC TBI) (75bhp)
  • L24 (SOHC MPFI) (100bhp)

Fuel System

Saturn made a few changes to the fuel system over the years.


1991 - 1997 Have the wonderful fuel return line.
1998 - 2002 Have the returnless fuel system.
1999(?) - 2002 have a plastic test port.
91-94 fuel pressure regulators are non-adjustable.
95-97 fuel pressure regulators are adjustable.
91-94 aluminum fuel rails will not fit 95-97 intake manifolds due to the bolt pattern and fuel lines being plastic.

Any aftermarket adjustable FPR for an 1992 through 1996 LT-1 Corvette will bolt right up to a Saturn fuel rail


Return type fuel rail used on 2003-04 Cavalier and Sunfires will convert "returnlees" type fuel rail on 2003-04 ION. You will need to convert/replace tank unit AND route a return line back to the fuel tank as well (or at least as far as the T-fitting at the fuel filter) The 2 line JBody filter can then replace the 3 line version in this mod.

'97 Fuel pumps are known somewhat for having isses. Often they are just slow to prime, and will work fine if you turn the key to "run" and wait to hear the pump kick in before turning to "start".


Design of a GM style injector
91-95 peak and hold or also known as low impedance
96-02 saturated or also known as high impedance

To determine injector types, set multi-meter to measure resistance.

  • 2-4(ohms) low impedance
  • 4-10(ohms) weird injectors. pretty much only found on old porsches.
  • 10-14(ohms) high impedance
  • DOHC injectors flow 19 lbs/min
  • SOHC (MPFI) injectors flow 15 lbs/min

The shape/style of the injectors changed sometime in the 3rd gen models. They switched to a long, thin injector with a different, non-Bosch harness. The fuel rail is positioned higher to compensate for the extra length. If you need after market injectors you'll have to cut and splice in standard Bosch style connectors to the factory wiring and modify the fuel rail to sit lower.

When performing a SOHC to DOHC swap, you need to use the appropriate DOHC injectors for that year vehicle as the SOHC injectors will not run correctly on the DOHC engine.

Fuel Rails

  • 91-94 aluminum fuel rails will not fit
  • 95-97 plastic fuel rails with adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
The plastic rail and aluminum rails have different bolt patterns.

  • 91-94 aluminum fuel rails will not fit 95-97 intake manifolds due to the bolt pattern and fuel lines being plastic.
  • 95-97 plastic fuel rails w/adjustable fuel pressure regulators will not fit the 91-94 intake manifolds due to the bolt pattern and fuel lines being metal.
  • 91-99 ports are identical.
  • 91-94 fuel rail mounts are set for the aluminum fuel rail.
  • 95-99 are set for the plastic rails.
  • 95-99 manifolds are identical.
  • 1st and 2nd gen manifolds will fit 00-02 heads.
  • 00-02 manifolds will NOT fit 91-98 heads.
  • 00-02 manifolds will fit 99 head if you drill out the EGR passage on the head to fit the EGR pipe.

The ports on the 93-94 are much cleaner than 91-92, though the 92 seemed to have a wider opening on the mouth of the intake ports. The 95 mics out close to the 93-94, though it is reshaped with a shallower curve leading down to the valve surface. The combustion chambers up to 94 are all identical.

  • early 95 TBs are the same as 91-94. Late 95 through 98 are the same though.
  • All TB's are horizontal, except for 2000-2002 DOHC. Those have the vertical throttle bodies on the plastic intake manifolds.

MAP/Pressure sensors

There are several varieties of pressure sensors from GM: Map sensors in 3 varieties (1 bar, 2 bar, 3 bar), and a barometric pressure sensor. 1 Bar sensors are good for NA engines, they measure from 0 (30inHg vacuum) to approximately atmospheric pressure. A 2 Bar sensor is good for 15 PSI of boost, and a 3 Bar unit is good for 30 psi of boost. They all share a common pinout, although the connector keying may be different:

When swapping heads from tbi SOHC to DOHC the engine side of the wiring harness needs to be swapped to the same year harness as the PCM/head. The SOHC PCM needs to be changed to the DOHC PCM of the same year grouping as the head (no matter what). If you have an auto, you must swap to the appropriate year DOHC tranny also.

If going from mpfi SOHC to DOHC, the harness doesn't need to be change.

96 used OBD-II style closed loop operation. If you want to boost and plan on having the stock computer be a part of things, pre-96 is better. You can run rich at boost/part throttle. 96 and later you can't, 99+ is even more sensitive.

When doing my swap from 95 SOHC to 96 DOHC I used the same wiring harness, but the 95 DOHC PCM I bought would not connect due to the connectors so I cut the little guide tabs off with some tile nippers and slid the connector in the PCM it snapped in and no service engine. The only problem was the 95 head has 2 temp sensors and the 96 only has one so I left the gauge sensor out.

You can use a 95 DOHC head all the way up to '98 all you have to do is buy one extra temp sender and screw it in the "spare" hole. Alternately, you can install the sender from an Autometer electric coolant temp gauge-it's a direct fit.

Now what difference does it make?

  • The 91-93 can be used to raise the compression slightly on the 94+ model years.
  • The 94+ valves can be used on 91-93 years to lower compression slightly.

  • 91-95(mid year) are aluminum
  • 95(mid year)-98 are black composite.
  • 96-98 have an extra bolt hole on the rear that won't be used on 91-95 heads, but they still work fine.
99-02 interchangeable.

The earlier cam covers seal better, as they have more bolts holding them down.

Composite cam covers seal fine if you run a small bead of Right Stuff on the surface.

Bottom End


S-Series Block
  • 91-02 blocks are compatible with all years
  • 1991 - 1993 (midway through '93) blocks contain an oil feed restrictor (looks like a freeze plug with a hole in it) present in the right front oil galley beneath the deck. This should be removed to prevent oil starvation to the head, as the newer headgaskets function as the restrictor.
  • 91-99 blocks interchange externally. Now internally it's a different ball game. The 91-92 had a crank all on its own that will not function correctly in the 93-99 years due to the positioning of the crank position sensor reluctor ring notches. 93-99 cranks are interchangeable
  • 92 to 02 blocks are totally interchangeable. The 00 and up blocks are stronger and all the accessories from previous years fit. Also, The internals from previous years will fit in the 00 and up blocks.
  • There were 2 dipstick tubes used, not entirely sure when they changed, but 91-92 I know for sure had a dipstick tube that positioned itself away from the block, and I know that my 99+2000 have a dipstick tube that hugs the block. The actual dipsticks are the same length so you can use either tube to move the dipstick out of the way of the turbo, or supercharger.
  • There are some minor differences between the older blocks and the 99+
    • The casting are different for the knock sensor on the 99+.
    • The older block positions the sensor midway between the middle oil gallery plug and the oil pressure sensor.
    • The 99+ blocks position the sensor at a different angle, almost directly above the middle gallery plug.
    • The sensor mounting bolt off a 99+ will not fit the threads on a older block.
  • The good news is the 99+ block still retains the mounting point for the old style knock sensor. If you end up installing an older block in a 99+ car you'll need a threaded stud and a nut to install the 3rd gen knock sensor. Also the casting is different for the belt tensioner. The 99+ has a large circular cut out behind the tensioner while the older style only has a cut out approximately an inch in diameter. The 99+ tensioner will not fit on the older blocks.

Also the Tie Plate inserts require a special socket SPX#J44057

Keep in mind if you are installing a Tie Plate on a SOHC block, you'll need a DOHC oil pick-up tube. The SOHC tube's mounting arms straddle the crankshaft while the DOHC tube attaches on one side of the block and to the bottom of the Tie Plate.

Connecting Rods

1999-02 rods are longer than the 91-98 rods, and have to be used with the 99-02 pistons which have the wrist pin moved up.

The 99-02 rods are 5.863" long vs 5.712" for the 91-98 rods.


Saturn Crankshafts

91-92 Only works with a 91-92 PCM. Avoid at all costs. If a 91-92 crank is used with a 93-95 PCM timing will be retarded, ALOT!
93-98 Are essentially identical. compatible with any year block.
99-02 Were redesigned with separate counter-weights; heavier but supposedly smoother running. Compatible with any year block.


Stock Saturn pistons
  • 91-93 Pistons + 94-99 valves equal lower compression.
  • 94-99 Pistons with 91-93 vales equal higher compression.
  • 99-02 Pistons are interchangeable between SOHC and DOHC engines.

Now with these compression changes they are slight not drastic. It is about a 2-2.5 point change in compression. So do not expect huge gains.

The 91-93 model years came with the lower compression piston than the later years. The way they maintained the 9:5:1 compression was using the flat faced valves. The 91-93 pistons also came with thicker ring lands which is a plus. Now the 94+ years came with a higher compression piston but it also came with thinner ring lands which is not good. The way they maintained the 9:5:1 compression was by using the dished valves to lower the compression down to its 9:5:1 state.

91-94 Pistons; Slight dish, thickest dome of all years. (Yields 9.5:1 compression with 91-94 flatfaced valves) Compatible with 91-98 rods.

Oil Pans

91-98 oil pans have a clearance problem when installing the windage tray from a 2000+up into your engine so get the oil pan along with the windage tray. The last 2 nuts hold the oil pan up about 1/4" off of the rail

00+ oil pans can be used on earlier engines but The earlier oil pans cannot be used on 00+ engines.



  • Starters are not auto or manual transmission specific.
  • The "change" in starters was the little bracket in the "first design" starter that mounted to the intermediate shaft bearing.
  • Also for 2000, they flipped the orientation of the battery terminal and the ignition terminal.

They all fit all years for the 1.9.

While 91-92 and 93-95 are both OBD I, they are not interchangeable due to a different CPS and timing mark the 91-92 crank and pcm use.

  • 1996-2002 = OBD2
  • 91-92 PCMs are grouped together. The wiring harness for them is slightly different (two wire type oil presssure unit). If using a 93+ block the oil pressure unit must be changed in order for the harness to hook-up.
  • 93-94 PCMs are grouped together.
  • 95 PCMs are year specific.
  • 00-02 uses both a PCM and BCM, and PCMs from these years do not swap with other years.

  • Automatic versions have ports for the transmission fluid lines. An automatic radiator will work on a manual, but obviously not vice-versa.
  • If you purchase an aftermarket radiator, it will almost certainly have the automatic transmission cooler ports. They simply are not used on a manual transmission car.
  • All S-Series radiators are prone to cracking vertically on the drivers side just under the hose connection.
  • Bad or failing motor mounts may help contribute significantly to cracking.
  • Stronger after market radiators can be purchased for an up charge.

Belt tensioner

The belt tensioner from a 2000 will not fit 91-94, I'm not sure about the 95-98 blocks though. The tensioner is too deep for the hole it sits in, 99+up have a bigger hole in them to accommodate the new tensioner. You can use the old style tensioner in the new blocks.

for anyone who would like to do a non P/S non A/C change over for

the pulley is grooved from a SOHC motor from saturn part# 21007458 $33.28

the belt that i used is from gates but you can use this number to get the correct length from any other A/M company part# K050551 $24.37

to remove just the A/C used the original smooth pulley and this belt part# K050660 $30.78

Motor Mounts

Prothane inserts. They're only $25.99 from Summit. And that will do both dogbones. Part # PTP-7-510. Caution: Engine Vibration may significantly increase over stock. SDA sells a set of dogbones that are also very good. Stay away from the Twistec dogbones. The metal ends are paper thin, and numerous people have reported them broken.



Saturn Transmission

All manual transmissions are interchangeable.

  • Issues may arise with the coil pack bolting position.
  • The earlier models had the coil pack wire harness on top (above the coil packs, w/two plugs, OBD1), while the 96+ had the harness on the bottom (below the coil packs, w/one plug, OBD2)
  • MP2 is the transmission from the SOHC (It has longer gears, less acceleration)
  • MP3 is the transmission from the DOHC (It has shorter gears, improved acceleration)
  • MP6 Automatic from the SOHC (It has longer gears, less acceleration)
  • MP7 Automatic from the DOHC (It has shorter gears, improved acceleration)
  • Differentials exchange between the two manual transmissions, and between the two automatic transmissions, but a manual differential will not work in an automatic trans, nor will an automatic differential work in a manual trans.
  • 1991 Saturn s-series lack upper motor mounts, (TAM), and consequently use a strut-like mount which attaches to the front of the transaxle. Originally equipped 1991 models may use only 1991- mid 1993 transaxles with provisions for the strut mount cast in to them.
  • All manual transmissions (mp2, mp3) use Dexron III fluid and use 2.5 quarts from empty
  • All automatic transmissions (mp6, mp7) use Dexron III fluid and use 5 quarts from empty

Automatic to manual swap

Any S-Series that is currently an automatic can receive a manual transmission from any other year or model S-Series.


  • The inner axle joint splines are the same from 91-02.
    • They will all fit into your transmission or onto your intermediate shaft regardless of trans type or brake equipment
  • The axle shaft itself is 23mm thick for 91-93. It is 24mm thick for 94-02.
    • This goes for ALL the axles. ABS made no difference here.
  • The outer CV joint is where the most debate seems to happen.
    • 91-93 has a smaller spline diameter requiring the 91-93 wheel hub when using these.
    • The 94-02 have a larger spline diameter, requiring the 94-02 hub.
  • Axles are not transmission specific. They are the same whether auto or manual transmission.


The ABS axle has a reluctor ring made into the outer CV housing. That's it. No other difference. In fact, if you have to go to Saturn to replace an axle, you will get an ABS reluctor ring for no extra charge, even if you don't need it. ALL replacement axle assemblies from the factory now have provisions for ABS to reduce production costs.


Pressure Plate and Clutch on a DOHC
  • 1991 - 1999 Have the original clutch design.
  • 2000 - 2002 Have the self-adjusting hydraulic POS.
  • 1991 - 2002 Have the same flywheel and throw-out bearing.

Saturn Shift Assembly

91-94 Shift boots clip into the console from above, have rectangular tapered bases and will not work in 95-2002 vehicles. 95-2002 boots attach to the shifter, there are molded in mount bosses on the shifter and the boot pops into place



Shifter Cables

All shifter cables interchange, there is only one part number available as replacements for 91-2002.


The replacement components have a square rubber grommet held in place by a metal retainer and 2 10mm nuts. The factory installed cables have a push in style pass through grommet. If you come across a vehicle that has the cables held in place with the metal bracket and nuts, it simply means they were replaced, not that they are "different" than the ones already on your car.


Aftermarket shifter cables are known for troubles with flexing, even when very new. OEM cables are recommended, even if they are used instead of new.



  • The rear disc brakes from any s-series will replace any s-series that has rear drums

Disk Brake Conversion

For some reason Saturn decided to change the E-brake cables six different times. The models listed below each have their own style E-brake cable. There are two different lengths (short wheelbase, and long).

Also, in '95 Saturn decided to change the connector at the E-brake cable. This continued till midway through '97, then they went BACK to the original style.

91-94 SC/SC1/SC2

1998-1999 2nd gen interior, with digital odometer. Odometer mileage stored in cluster. White face gauges used on White Hot and Red Hot models (98 & 99).
2000-2002 3rd gen interior. Odometer mileage stored in BCM, not the cluster. Cluster swappable with all L-Series clusters, and most Vue, Chevy Equinox, and Pontiac Torrent clusters with some minor issues with the dummy lights.

97 and 99 gauge clusters are interchangeable regardless of the digital/analog odometer difference. all i had to do was replace a bulb from behind the odo with one off the original cluster. so from this i think all 2nd gen clusters swap...



  • 3rd gen SC headlights will fit on a 2nd gen SC.
    • All you need are the headlights and the headlight brackets.
    • Hood would complete the full conversion, but is not necessary.
  • 3rd gen SL headlights will fit on a 2nd gen SL.
    • All you will need are the headlights and the headlight brackets.


All OEM alloy wheels interchange.

  • The 94-95 style 12-slot sawtooth wheels are the lightest at about 14lbs
  • The first generation teardrops are the heaviest at 19.5lbs.
  • All Saturn alloy wheels use a 15X6" 4X100 bolt pattern with a 50mm offset.
